Much more efficient.
The drum itself rotates 1 direction and the drum base goes the opposite direction.....you can hear it's action while washing...that sloshing is this dual action making this machine very effective at cleaning.

Question

Which LG Washer is best for small (delicate) to large loads (queen comforters), queen waterproof mattress pads, rain jackets and shower curtains, etc?

Need to find a top load washer that can handle small (delicate) loads and medium to large loads of heavy towels, jeans, queen comforters with waterproof mattress pads, rain jackets and shower curtains, etc. Want enough HOT water to get the clothes and bedding clean. And, need a washing machine that does not need to be baby sat due to balancing issue or needs 2 hours to clean clothes. Does LG offer a model that can satisfy these requests without breaking the bank? Was looking at the LG WT4870CW but many people say they cannot wash waterproof bedding and have balancing issues that shut machine down.

The WT4870CW washer does all that. It adjusts for load size, and has settings for just about anything I can think of. It holds my thick king size mattress pad easily, but also does small loads well. It has gotten out of balance once since I got it. Then it because I had one heavy thing that got bunched up. I straightened the load and it worked fine through the rest of the wash. I love mine.

If I were you I would lean more towards the LG large capacity front loader. We are seriously considering donating our WT4870CW to charity after 3 months of use because of the load imbalancing issue which happens way too frequently to be true, in favor of the WM3470HVA which is a smaller version of the one I think you might do well with.
Also when I washed a comforter in the WT4870CW there was detergent residue left behind & we had to run the cycle again to clean it.

The Water Plus option does not require the Extra Rinse option. It will, however, add water to both the wash and rinse cycles. Information about this feature states to select this option to add extra water to the wash and rinse cycles for superior results, especially with large or bulky items. The Water Plus option is activated by pressing and holding the EXTRA RINSE button for 3 seconds.

OK, NeilE, since you're the expert I'd like to follow up. Just how is someone supposed to wash rubber backed bath rugs if the washing machine can't do it? Bathroom rugs get dirty and we've always washed them in the washer (not using the dryer). If HE washers can't do these type rugs, then LG should provide some alternative guidance otherwise sales - including mine - will be lost due to this deficiency. So, what say you?

Question

How to wash diapers and really dirty clothes?

How do I wash my cloth diapers? In my old washer I could presoak for any amount of time by leaving the lid up. Then rinse in cold (20 minutes) then wash in HOT for 50 minutes and my diapers were always clean. I could use Charlie's soap without problem. This machine won't allow me to soak longer than 30 minutes. It won't allow it to get HOT. They only way to get my diapers clean is to wash them in the "stain care" cycle-which uses cold water, then in bright whites to get a hot wash. I had to switch to All Free and Clear soap which is not Eco friendly. This results in almost 3.5 hours of wash time and using soap that is not environmentally friendly (and yes-I use 1/2 the recommended amount) and washing them twice which is using more water and energy than my old washer! Suggestions?

There is no soak option over 30 minutes as the water just drains out if you lift the lid after the drum has filled. Just washing in the bright whites cycle or the normal cycle set on hot does not get them clean. I've tried washing on both cycles with a presoak (only 30 minutes) and that does not get them clean either. So far, the only thing that really gets diapers or other heavily soiled clothes clean is the stain care cycle (no hot option available) then again in the bright whites cycle. It takes over 3 hours.

You can simply press "Pause" button after the washer fills with water and it will sit there until you resume the cycle. That will allow you to presoak your laundry for as long as you need it. Then, I would power off the washer and power it back on and make it go through rinsing cycle. Then, you can wash the laundry in hot water. Remember, with each washing cycle, you can change the temperature of water to hot (it doesn't have to be warm all the time).

We regret your dissatisfaction with the operations of this washing machine. CLOTH diapers can typically be washed using either the COTTON/NORMAL or the BRIGHT WHITES wash cycles. Both of these cycles have the ability to utilize a HOT water wash. The manufacturer does not require the ALL Free & Clear soap. The only requirement is to use a low-sudsing, High Efficiency detergent. The wash cycle is designed to use only about 13-15 gallons of water, compared to the 60 gallons used by a traditional washer. As such, even two cycles is more energy- and water-efficient than an older style washer. Hopefully this helps the situation. If you have additional questions about this product and its operations, please contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000.

We appreciate your interest in this washing machine. A load that is too small will be one that allows the load to all cluster to one side of the tub during a spin cycle. This is based on the weight of the fabrics, as well as the number of garments. As such, there is no set number of articles to which we might refer.

According to the owner’s manual, do not wash or spin any item labeled or known to be waterproof or water-resistant, even if the product care label on the item permits machine washing.
