I am also a Gamer... I have this TV and I have had the older model 42pj350 which are both basically the same TV's. I have not had any problem with burn or any other issues with either one of the TV's. both have great sound and picture. You made a good choice.

Any television that has a stationary image for a long period of time can experience screen burn. No model number was provided, so it is difficult to determine exactly which features have been provided. Our plasma televisions have a set of features known as the Image Sticking Minimization features, or ISM. The periodic use of these features can help reduce or remove any effects of screen burn.

Question

When in 4:3 aspect ratio, the unused side portions of the screen are distractingly lit up gray rather than being black. Is there a way to change this?

Forcing the aspect ratio into 16:9 instead of the video's natural 4:3 ratio (for those with such) to avoid this only makes matters worse as it stretches the picture out sideways, making things in the picture look odd. Is there a setting somewhere which would change this "side gray bars" to black, or a firmware update perhaps? It is sufficiently unpleasant that I am considering returning this TV even though I am otherwise very pleased with its quality and features.

Thank you for that information, NeilE. Upon further research (went to a store), I found this effect to be typical of other major brands as well, no doubt for that same, important reason. These gray-lit sidebars, though distracting when using 4:3 aspect, are not as bad a thing as an LCD or LED TV's motion blur, and I love the rich colors of plasmas. So I'll keep my plasma after all!

We regret your dissatisfaction with the design of this television. The side bars on the screen are designed to be gray in order to reduce the effects of screen burn while viewing a 4:3 ratio image. Having a 4:3 image on the screen for an extended period of time, with black side bars, will result in a very likely appearance of screen burn in the pattern of these side bars. Having gray bars will allow the unused portion of the screen to remain active which will reduce this screen burn effect.

If these are the only connections available on your DVD player, then it is not designed to use the RGB/DVI AUDIO IN port. The COAXIAL DIGITAL port is not compatible with the RGB/DVI AUDIO IN, and does not have an equivalent port available on this TV. Your DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT jacks are designed to connect to an external Home Theater System, rather than to a television. If you do not have a Home Theater System, then this DVD player should only connect to this TV using the RED/WHITE audio cables, along with your video cable.

I apologize, but 42PT 50 is not a complete model number. As such, it is difficult to determine if this is the correct information. However, if the model in question is the 42PT350, then the unit is most directly compatible with the PSW400B, PSW400BG, or DSW400BG mounting brackets.

We appreciate your interest in this television. This unit does not have the capabilities for connecting directly with headphones. All of the “RCA” jacks on this unit are signal INPUTs only. The only audio OUTPUT on this TV would be the OPTICAL Digital Audio Output jack that has been designed for use with a Home Theater System.
