Question

Can't access files on NAS!

My first couple of times accessing this NAS via either the web GUI or a samba browser worked just fine. After spending a lot of time transferring my video library over FTP, now when I attempt to browse the files via the web GUI, I get "you have no read permission on this folder" error! Attempts to cannect via samba time out! I am admin with full permissions.

Also, the help files are all in JAPANESE! As you have guessed, English is my preferred language, and I do not speak Japanese at all. Poor foresight on LGs part...

We regret the trouble you have experienced with this NAS device. I understand about the help files reverting to its Korean default. The Login Screen should give an option to change the language so that the help files can be viewed in English. Normally, the ADMIN account belongs to a default “USERS” group. The group permissions override the regular user permissions, so if admin has read/write but the group has read-only or no permissions, admin won't be able to access, so you should make sure that the "USERS" group also has permission to access the file. You might try creating a user with ALL ACCESS to see if this will allow access to your data files. You may also try going to CONFIGURATION>PERMISSIONS & SHARING>SHARED FOLDER and then select the folder to edit, and then select ALL for sharing permission. This should resolve the problem. If there are still difficulties after this, then please contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000 for additional assistance.

Access to your NAS device can be accessed via the Internet, if this has been arranged before you have left the device. This can be done by forwarding the ports on your router, and if you wish, you may use a Dynamic DNS Server Name. These would be created in the WEB menu for the unit. Assistance on how to do this can be found on our website, here: http://lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index....

Yes, that is why I bought the 2gb version, N1A1 NF1. When you launch the Windows explorer, click on "network", then click on "LG-NAS". You will see the drive and the default folders. This also true of any wi-fi connected laptops you might have on your network. LG also provides a means on accessing those folders via the internet from remote locations.

We appreciate your interest in this device. According to our information, the NAS is a full 1 TB drive, but it has 2 partitions when the N1A1DD1 is configured to its External HDD mode, and connected by the USB. They are around 400 GB. The full drive is available when configured to the NAS mode, using an Ethernet cable.

Question

OSX Lion and Time machine

I picked up an LG N1A1DD1 and it seems like the time machine feature doesn't work, maybe only with OSX Lion? I noticed a question was asked about one of the other LG NAS devices and the LG response was expect a firmware update in September. Is there going to be an updated for this NAS, and if so, do you have an updated schedule as to when it might be released?

Just trying to respond to Neil. Pennsylvania is in the United States, in any case I'm trying to understand whether LG is going to provide updated firmware at some point to address the issue with OSX Lion and the AFP protocol. The documentation on this website for the N1A1DD1 talks about Time Machine support and specifically mentions OSX 10.5 and later. Lion is 10.7 and it doesn't work. So I'm trying to understand whether I should return the product, or whether LG is going to release a fix for this. If not, at least update the documentation so that other customers aren't lead to believe it works. I'm just trying to understand if the product will be fit for the purpose I bought it for, which is Time Machine backups. It's in the documentation so I expected it to work. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

At this time, we do not have a release date for a firmware update. However, it may be possible to use the alternate protocol, .SMB. To access it from a Mac, select Finder, and then 'Go' and then 'Connect to Server'. From there, you will have to type smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the ip address for the NAS). Once this process is complete, you should be able to access the drive. We do not have any information about the operation of models in Denmark. For assistance with this product, please review this alternate website: http://www.lg.com/dk/index.jsp.

Thank you for providing this information. According to our documentation, each of the Operating Systems you have mentioned have been tested and found to be able to map the NAS drive. On Windows XP, try the following: Go to Start and select Run; Type \\ipaddress; Verify whether you are able to see the NAS folders and then try mapping again. If you wish for the Ubuntu 10.10 and lower, try the following: Select Places, then Connect to server; Select Windows shares; Type the IP Address for the NAS. Hopefully, you should see the NAS folders. Regretfully we don't have instructions for mapping on Ubuntu. You might have to check on Ubuntu support for this. Our support on Linux is limited on this device. Unfortunately, our latest firmware update links are corrupted. However, you should be able to get the latest update at this site: http://www.lgservice.co.kr/cs_lg/do.... The file is called firmware-nt1-1_8421rfke.bin. Hopefully this will be helpful to you. If you have additional questions, please contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000.
