A thin layer of frost on shelves and food items is normal. However, if frost is forming around the door, at the back of the unit, or excessive other issues might be occurring.
Are the doors opened often and closing properly? Every time the door opens, cold air escapes and warm air enters the cabinet. The warm air contains moisture that freezes and accumulates in the unit. A small amount accumulating on food, shelves and rails is normal. Make certain that the door seal is clean. Check for cold air escaping from the door by running hand around the perimeter of the door. If you feel cold air coming out, check to see if the seal is damaged in that area.
Is there a food item blocking the door? If there is something blocking the door, preventing it from closing completely then warm air will be able to enter the unit. This will cause frost buildup in the unit. Rearrange the food items in the freezer so that the item is no longer blocking the door.
Is the temp set too cold? Frost buildup can also occur if the temperature is set too low when there is not much food in the unit and/or the doors are not opened very often. Try raising the temperature in the unit so that it is not as cold. How much will vary depending on amount of food and how often doors are opened.
Has anything hot been added to the compartment? Warm air contains moisture, which will freeze in the unit. Allow food to cool before storing in the unit. This will prevent frost from occurring.
Is there too much food stored in the freezer compartment? If there is too much food in the freezer, this will inhibit proper air circulation which will cause frost formation. Make certain that nothing is blocking the air vents and that there is not too much in the compartment. Try removing some items and rearranging the items.
