We regret the inconvenience you have experienced with this BluRay player. The only volume controls on the remote control are for television operations, if the controller and TV are compatible. Page 76 of the owner’s manual provides programming instructions for the controller to operate certain televisions.

We regret the inconvenience you have experienced with this BluRay player. According to our information, it appears that the User Interface of this particular model does not support Profile Switching. If such a feature becomes available by software update, the availability will show in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Since you're asking this in a Q&A for the LG BD550, then you must have one, or are thinking of getting one. This Bluray player is an excellent Netflix streaming device-I have used it and find it is better than other methods I have used. The only thing better than the BD550 would be any other LG Bluray player with streaming capabilities.

Question

Can I watch my dvd collection on the lg bd550 blue ray player

I already have an internet service that I am pleased with, and I am not interested in subscribing to another one - or switching services. I am interested in subscribing to netflicks, but nothing else. I am waiting for delivery on the lg bd550 blue ray player, and the lg 42" ld550 television; and I already have the entry level Yamaha home theatre system and 3G internet service on my laptop computer. How can I pull all of this together to make it work without additional services?

I dont understand your question? Pull all of this together? If you are going with Netflix and or already have an account. you can go through your DVD player which I assume is hooked to your 42' and watch movies on your TV. You will have to set up your DVD player with the Netflix account which is well exlained in the owners manual. other than that you should be good to go.

If your HDTV has a DVI (Digital Video Interface) port, you can buy either a HDMI to DVI cable or HDMI to DVT adapter to connect the BD550 to your HDTV. Otherwise, component (red/green/blue) cables are an excellent choice, although they limit you to 1080i. Also remember that either method also needs a set of audio cables-either the red and white stereo cables or a coaxial digital audio cable. The BD550 does not have an optical audio output. The HDTV has to be HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) capable or some titles will not show on your TV.

The BD550 has both composite (red/white/yellow) audio/video and component (red/green/blue) video outputs but does not have an S-Video output. Most SDTVs have composite video inputs and some high end SDTVs have component video inputs. If you use component video, however, make sure to set the output to 480i as that is all a SDTV can handle. Also remember that component cables are video only-you'll either need a set with audio cables included or a separate set of audio cables. Thankfully, LG includes a set of audio cables and a separate video cable with the BD550. Finally, if your TV doesn't have any RCA inputs, you can run the player through an RF modulator. However, if you're doing that, it would probably be better to ditch the old TV and get a HDTV!

Do you have a router between your cable modem and your BD550? If not, you should get one. It will make connecting the player to the internet easier, as well as giving you a hardware firewall to protect your system from hackers.

As I understand it, the USB port on the BD550 serves two purposes. It lets you plug in a flash drive so you can play music and show photos on your TV (as well as record songs from CDs to flash drives.) It also will allow you to update your software if you do not have high speed internet access. The USB port, as far as I can tell, will not support a USB WiFi adapter. You would have to use one that connects by Ethernet cable.

The BD550 and BD570 are cousins. The 550 has wired networking only while the 570 has wireless. It all depends on whether you want to pay extra for WiFi built-in.

The BD550 is not designed to get an IP (Internet Protocol) address directly from the internet. It needs a router to act as a buffer between it and the internet. No computer, unless specifically designed to provide routing to external devices, will act as a router.

First, it must be an Ethernet-connected wireless adapter. You will have to follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to configure it prior to connecting it to the BD550. If it is done right, it will connect automatically. I know because I did it myself.
