Customer questions and answers for LG Electronics 50PV450

Question

Is the 50PV450 the same as the 50PV400 found at Costco?

I see the 50PV400 at Costco and I am thinking about buying it. However, I can't really find any solid info on it anywhere. Is this just a 'rebranded' 50PV450 for Costco?

No, these two televisions are not exactly the same. As the similarities in the model numbers suggest, there are a great many similarities between these units. The differences are minor, such as the loss of a USB port on the 50PV400. There may also be some minor contrast ratio differences. The operations of the products will be the same, however, and should still serve you well.

Yes, this connection can be fixed. Typically, it will require the replacement of the board on which all the connections are attached. It is generally considered physical damage to the unit, regardless of whether intentional or not, and as such is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. To make arrangements for service, please contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000.

Question

Can I turn off whatever causes it to go dim at times when scenes change?

My screen automatically will dim itself and then brighten again in the middle of watching programs. I have the Dynamic contrast set to off, as recommended by LG reviewers and it still happens. Is there anything else I can do or any firmware updates?

The automatic dimming of the image on the screen is most likely related to the Smart Energy Saving mode. If this feature is deactivated, the image should stop dimming.

The HDMI ports, on this television, are at least version 1.3. Should you choose to obtain the version 1.4 cables, they will be fully backward compatible with all previous HDMI software versions.

Plasma television can easily retain a burned image when they are connected to a computer. These can typically be removed using the Image Sticking Minimization features, or ISM listed in the menu screens of the set. If this does not resolve the situation within about an hour or two of running this feature, then the unit may require service. In that case, please contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000 for service arrangements.

Question

Plasmas - Std Def on 50PV450 vs 50PV400 vs 50PT350

Hi - we're currently in the market for a 50" plasma. We'd like to provide flexibility for the future (which is why we're considering some 1080p units), but at current it's likely the majority of the content viewed will be standard definition over cable. From looking at the specs of the PV450 (and I'm assuming the PV400, although I can't find the specs on your web site, but based on several other answers on the forum it appears to be the same unit as the PV450 except for the USB connectivity) and the specs of the PT350, it would appear that standard definition would be the same on all of the units mentioned. Am I missing anything? Is there anything in the specs or functionality that would indicate that the performance of these above units would be different in how they display a standard definition signal? Any insight or thoughts would be very much appreciated.

This model does appear to be a very recent model. To know for certain, we would need to know the serial number. The first digit of the serial number corresponds with the year in which the unit was manufactured. For instance, if the number begins with a 7, it was probably manufactured in 2007. This unit will likely begin with either a 0 or a 1, which will be 2010 or 2011, respectively. The second and third digits of the serial correspond with the month in which the unit was manufactured; ranging from 01 to 12 for January through December.

No, there is no specified “break-in period” required for the use of your television. Were there to be such a suggestion from the manufacturer, this information would have been printed in the owner’s manual for “Before Normal Use”.

Yes, it is possible for a plasma television to have screen burn, even when the unit is set to 16:9 aspect ratio. If any image remains on the screen, or in any individual location on the screen, for any length of time, it is possible that the image will burn into the screen. If this appears to be happening, it is recommended to activate the Image Sticking Minimization (ISM) features: specifically, it is recommended to activate the WHITE WASH feature, and allow this to run for the space of about an hour. After that time, turn off the feature and inspect the unit to ensure that the stuck/burned image has been removed.

Unlike other sensors which can only sense brightness of ambient light, LG’s “Intelligent Sensor” uses 4,096 sensing steps to evaluate its surroundings. Using a sophisticated algorithm, the LG processes picture quality elements including brightness, contrast, color, sharpness and white balance. The result is a picture optimized for it’s surroundings, more pleasing to watch and which can also save up to 50% in power consumption.
